How to Introduce Hip Hop Grooves to Young Students

Introducing the concept of “groove” to young dancers may seem like a daunting task to some- after all, can young children really follow grooves? Absolutely! According to Edwin Gordon’s Music Learning Theory (2003), even toddlers as young as 2-3 years old can develop rhythmic coordination and begin to synchronize their movements with music. This makes teaching hip hop grooves to young dancers both possible and exciting!

Young children learn music in much the same way that they learn language: through listening, responding, and internalizing patterns.”

Edwin E. Gordon, Learning Sequences in Music (2003)

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Introduce Simple Beats
Play songs with clear, repetitive rhythms and encourage tapping or clapping along.

  2. Use Fun Movements
Start with basic movements like bouncing, side-stepping, or arm swings. Keep it simple and repeat the motions.

  3. Incorporate Games
Use clapping games or “freeze dance” to make rhythm practice fun and interactive.

  4. Encourage Creativity
Let children explore their own movements, embracing the individuality that hip hop celebrates.

With Gordon’s research supporting that children can grasp rhythm early, you can help even the youngest dancers start grooving with confidence!
